When it first appeared, in late 1991, Nintendo was so utterly dominant they never showed a game before it was finished. The first most journalists saw of it was a huge pre-production cart, and early impressions were disappointing. Graphics were cute, but simplistic and the first racing class was tediously slow. Only at 150CC did the game deliver enough speed to expose the kart's subtle handling qualities. To save on memory, later circuits had to re-use graphics from earlier ones. More significantly, there wasn't space to provide an optimised, full-screen version so one player mode used the same split-screen perspective as the two player mode. Finally, even all these compromises didn't change the fact that the Super NES is a 2-D machine. Its Mode 7 trickery was limited to rotating entirely flat landscapes, albeit brilliantly disguised with clever track design and 2-D obstacles.

Sure the graphics are leaps and bounds over its 16-bit predecessor. And sure the kart handling will be all the much better with the N64 analogue controls. But you can't have more fun than racing (and pushing off the road) three of your friends.

The game plays a little slowly at this stage of development, but the polygonal graphics, textured backgrounds, and stomach-churning twists and turns of the track are sure to rope in a new generation of kart-racing fans.

Easily one of the best 16-bit racing games ever, Super Mario Kart will also drive Mario World's go-kart action to the Nintendo 64. You'll wheel and deal with such classic Nintendo characters as Luigi, Koopa, the Princess, Bowser...and Wario! As you race the gang across multiple 3D polygon, texture-mapped tracks, you can watch the gameplay views from either a behind-the-cart or head-on perspect ive. Two players will drive via a horizontal split-screen view, but four-player racing will split the screen into four square sections. Mario Kart looks like it's headed for the fast lane.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart (usually shortened to SRB2Kart or SRB2K) is a source code modification of Version 2.1 made by Kart Krew. Originally based on the Mario Kart mode of SRB2 Riders, it is a kart racing game with Sonic and SEGA-themed characters, items and maps. SRB2Kart features over 100 maps for two game modes: the main Race mode and a Battle mode where players fight each other using the items available in the game. Despite Version 2.2 being out, SRB2Kart is still supported by Kart Krew, the Message Board, and the Master Server. Future releases are still planned.

Kart racing games are a classic way for games that are traditionally from other genres to effectively mix things up. The classic example is Mario Kart, but Sonic has had a number of racing games over the years both in karts, on foot, and on hoverboards.

Super Mario Kart set the standard for kart racing games with its original release on the SNES. It went on to set the standard every time another entry in the series was released, and this has continued to be the case for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Though the game is also available on the Wii U, this Deluxe version is the definitive experience.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe excels at pretty much everything. From great online play to fair item scaling based on what place you are currently in, this kart racing party game is the quintessential romp for any gaming get-together. You don't even need a TV since the Switch can be used as the screen. 041b061a72
